What really matters under €50
Advertised battery life includes the case
When a listing announces 40 or 75 hours, it is almost always the total including recharges from the case. The battery life of a single continuous listening session is much shorter. Compare two models on the same basis, and be wary of very high round figures.
ENC is not noise cancelling while you listen
Many entry-level models display "ENC". This acronym refers to filtering the noise picked up by the microphones during calls: the person you are talking to hears you better, but you don't hear the metro any less. Active noise cancelling while listening is rarer at this price and is announced explicitly.
The number of reviews matters more than the rating
A 4.5/5 rating from 610 reviews and a 4.4/5 rating from more than 114,000 reviews don't tell the same story. The second has withstood thousands of real-world uses; the first can still move a lot.
Water resistance, only if you sweat or run in the rain
The IPX5 rating covers splashes and sweat; IPX7 goes as far as temporary immersion. For use at the office or on public transport, it is not a decisive criterion.
