A heated blanket does not replace a room heater: it warms a bed or a person, up close, with a few dozen watts. You still need the right form โ under the sheet, on top of the bed or on the sofa โ, the right size and the level of control that suits you. Here is what it really costs to run, the safety points to check, and the choice by profile based on Picksly's new Top 10 of heated blankets and throws.

How much does a heated blanket cost to run?
The calculation fits on one line: power (in kW) ร time (in hours) ร price per kWh. The power is the one stated by the manufacturer, in watts: 60 W is 0.06 kW.
For the price per kWh, we use the French regulated tariff as an example: EDF's Tarif Bleu, Base option, 6 kVA meter: โฌ0.2001 per kWh including tax since 1 August 2026 (French energy regulator CRE, decision no. 2026-147 of 15 July 2026; figure including tax quoted by the comparison sites Kelwatt and Selectra). This is the French price, not yours: with another contract or in another country, replace 0.2001 with the price per kWh on your bill.

Amounts in euro cents at โฌ0.2001/kWh. They are maximums: they assume the appliance runs at full power the whole time. On a low setting, with a thermostat that cuts the heat from time to time or a timer that switches it off, actual use is lower. Two examples: warming the bed for 30 minutes with a 120 W blanket uses at most 0.06 kWh, i.e. 1.2 cents; one hour of a 150 W throw every evening for 30 days uses at most 4.5 kWh, i.e. โฌ0.90.
The comparison with a heater is only an order of magnitude, because the use is not the same: a heater warms the air of a room, a heated blanket warms the bed or the person under it. It does not heat a cold bedroom; it makes the bed pleasant when you slip in, or the sofa when you sit still.
Underblanket, blanket or throw: which form?
- The heated underblanket (or heated mattress pad) goes on the mattress, under the sheet, held by elastic straps. It is the most common form in the Top 10: it warms the bed from below, often before bedtime.
- The heated blanket goes on top of the bed, like an ordinary blanket, or over yourself.
- The heated throw is made for the sofa: you drape it over your legs or shoulders, with the controller within reach.
For size, a single model usually measures 150 x 80 cm. The double models in the Top 10 range from 150 x 140 to 160 x 140 cm, and up to 200 x 150 cm for a king-size bed. For two people, look for two controllers (one per side): each sets their own warmth, or leaves their side off.
Appliances sold in France are made for 230 V mains and European sockets: in the United States or the United Kingdom, choose a model sold in your own country.
Safety: what to check
- Automatic shut-off: a timer (1, 3 or 9 hours on several Top 10 models) and a cut-out in case of overheating. Both together is better.
- Several heat settings: from 2 to 8 depending on the model. A low setting is often enough once the bed is warm.
- Washable: most can be washed at 30 ยฐC once the controller is detached. If the controller does not detach, washing is by hand: that is the case for one Top 10 model.
- Do not fold or crush the appliance while it is on, do not store it damp, do not stick pins in it, and check the cord before each winter.
- Read the manual: some reserve the appliance for warming the bed and ask you to switch it off before sleeping; others restrict use by young children or by people who do not feel heat well. The manual of your model is what counts.
Which heated blanket for your profile?

Does a heated blanket use a lot of electricity?
No, on the scale of a household: from 60 to 150 W for the Top 10 models whose power is stated, i.e. at most 1.2 to 3 cents per hour at the French regulated Base tariff of 1 August 2026 (โฌ0.2001/kWh). A 1,000 W portable heater is 20 cents per hour, for a different use.
Can you sleep with a heated blanket switched on?
It depends on the model: some manuals ask you to switch it off before falling asleep, others provide a timer for the night. Read the manual of yours; if in doubt, warm the bed and then switch off.
Underblanket or heated blanket: which to choose?
The underblanket, under the sheet, warms the bed from below and goes unnoticed. The blanket goes on top and can also be used outside the bed. For the sofa, take a throw.
