The best laptop in 2026 is not the same for a gamer, a remote worker or a video editor, and it changes again with your profile: happy to buy refurbished, attached to new, or set on the high end. Rather than a list of models whose prices change every week, this guide explains what Picksly measures on a laptop, what it does not measure, how to read the scores for your use, and which laptop it picks for each profile: Budget, Smart or Premium. It covers every price range; if you are a student on a tight budget, our guide to the student laptop under โฌ700 goes further on that case.
A laptop is a configuration, not a model
A single range name covers dozens of versions: processors from different generations, 8 or 16 GB of memory, with or without a graphics card. Picksly therefore identifies each listing by its range, chip and memory, read from the title of the listing. Two laptops with the same name can have very different scores: always compare the exact configuration, not the range. The detailed rules are on the laptop method page.
What Picksly measures, and what it does not
Picksly does not test laptops itself. It scores each criterion from 0 to 100 from a named public source:
- Processor: the PassMark CPU Mark score of the chip named in the listing. A chip that PassMark does not clearly identify is not scored.
- Graphics: the PassMark G3D Mark score of the dedicated card named in the listing, or of the integrated graphics when the chip is identified. The scale is calibrated on laptop graphics cards: integrated graphics score 0 on it, and among dedicated cards, only those from the RTX 3050 upwards rise above that floor.
- Memory: the amount announced, from 4 GB (score 0) to 16 GB (score 100). According to this formula, 8 GB is worth about 33 out of 100.
Picksly also scores, when the manufacturer's spec sheet gives them, the weight and the battery capacity (in Wh): weight for 73 of the 186 tracked laptops, battery for 41 (as of 11 October 2026). A capacity is not a measured battery life: an efficient chip lasts more hours on fewer Wh, and no public source measures laptop battery life at scale. Picksly still scores neither the screen nor storage: no screen source can be matched to a precise configuration. A criterion that is not measured for a model counts at the laptop median in the calculation of its score, but its weight stays in the total: an overall score only exists if more than half of the criteria weight is actually measured. Otherwise, the laptop is listed without a score rather than with a flattering figure.
Example (as of 11 October 2026): a Vivobook Go with a Ryzen 3 7320U and 8 GB gets 32.5 for processor, 0 for graphics and 33.33 for memory. Its weight and battery are not measured: they count at the laptop median (19.57 for battery life, 34.55 for weight on that date), giving a Market score of 25.8 (32.5 ร 30 + 0 ร 10 + 33.33 ร 15 + 19.57 ร 30 + 34.55 ร 15, all divided by 100). It is a low score, not a verdict: above all, it says that this laptop is not built for gaming.
Reading the scores for your use
Office work, browsing, remote work
The overall ("Market") score gives 10% to graphics (5% for Budget and Smart, 25% for Premium), and a laptop without a dedicated card scores 0 there: it therefore favours gaming laptops. For office work, look at the criteria one by one instead: rank laptops by processor score, then by memory score. A recent mid-range processor and 16 GB of memory are plenty for these uses (editorial opinion). Then check for yourself the screen and the real battery life: the score only sees the battery capacity and the weight, when the manufacturer's sheet gives them.
Gaming
Here, graphics is the deciding criterion. Rank laptops by graphics score: only dedicated cards score above 0. Check that the card is actually named in the listing (RTX, Radeon RX) and compare like for like: the same gaming range often comes with several cards. A dedicated card makes the laptop heavier and shortens battery life; if you mostly play at home, consider a suitable PC monitor and PC headset.
Creative work: photo, video, 3D
Processor, graphics and memory all matter, and 16 GB becomes a minimum for editing (editorial opinion). Screen colour accuracy is not scored: look for screen tests of the exact model. A special case is the MacBook: PassMark publishes no graphics score for Apple M chips, which therefore have no graphics score. A MacBook only gets an overall score if its manufacturer sheet also gives its weight and battery: as of 11 October 2026, 7 of the 15 MacBook listings have one, and the others keep only a processor score and a memory score, less than half the weight. Compare them on the processor score, not on an overall ranking many of them are missing from.
Mobility
Picksly scores the weight stated by the manufacturer and the battery capacity when the spec sheet gives them, but not the real battery life. Rely on battery tests published by the specialist press for the exact configuration, and on the manufacturer's weight, not on the merchant listing.
Which laptop for your profile
In a comparison of two to four laptops, Picksly picks one choice per profile, according to public rules. On the laptops page, you can also rank all models by Budget, Smart or Premium score.
๐ข Budget profile: โฌ700 at most, new or refurbished
The Budget profile only keeps laptops whose price, new or refurbished, does not exceed โฌ700, and among them the one with the best Budget score; without a score, the cheapest. Value for money weighs 35% there, and the price used is the lower of the new and refurbished offers. It is the only profile that accepts refurbished: an older business laptop can come out ahead of an entry-level new one if its score and price justify it. See laptops at โฌ700 or less, ranked by Budget score, or at โฌ500 or less. Our refurbished or new guide helps you choose the seller and the grade.
๐ฃ Smart profile: the best balance, new
The Smart profile is the default profile. It sets no price band: it only looks at new offers, discards laptops whose Smart score is below 50 out of 100, and keeps the best one. Value for money weighs 20% there, alongside processor (25%), battery life (25%), memory (15%), weight (10%) and graphics (5%). Battery life is the battery capacity and weight is the manufacturer's, measured on only part of the listings; for the others, the laptop median stands in. When Picksly suggests a laptop outside your selection for this profile, it never picks one more expensive than the most expensive laptop you are comparing. See laptops ranked by Smart score, or those at โฌ1,000 or less if you have a ceiling.
๐ต Premium profile: the best quality, regardless of price
The Premium profile ignores price and only keeps new laptops, never refurbished, with a Premium score of at least 60 out of 100: processor 30%, graphics 25%, memory 15%, battery life 20% and weight 10%. According to these weights, a laptop without a dedicated card (graphics at 0) tops out at 45 points with a perfect processor and 16 GB: battery life (20%) and weight (10%) have to supply the missing 15 to reach 60. The Premium rule also only keeps models released within the last 24 months, but Picksly does not yet know the release date of laptops: this condition therefore rules out no laptop today. Check the processor generation yourself. See laptops ranked by Premium score.
The trap of old business laptops sold as "new"
While reviewing offers, we found business laptops from 2019 or 2020 (ThinkPad, Latitude) listed as new for less than the same model refurbished: very probably end-of-lease refurbished units mislabelled by the seller. Since 26 September 2026, a laptop listed as new at less than 95% of the price of a verified refurbished offer for the same model, with the same storage read in both listings, is no longer treated as new: it no longer supports a Smart or Premium choice, and Budget judges it at the refurbished price. The rule sees nothing without a verified refurbished offer, or when storage is missing from a title; our student guide explains how to read the generation of an Intel processor to spot these cases.
How to find yours with Picksly
- Open the laptops page, choose a price band, then rank by profile score or by criterion.
- Select two to four laptops: Picksly picks one choice per profile and says why, or says that none fits ("nothing under โฌ700", "no recent high-end model").
- Check on the merchant listing what the score does not see: storage, screen, real battery life, keyboard, and weight when the listing has no weight score. For your workstation, our guide to the best keyboard complements this one.
- Also see the Top 10 laptops, a selection built from real merchant listings.
FAQ
What is the best laptop in 2026?
There is no single one: the ranking depends on your use, your profile and current prices, which Picksly recalculates from the verified offers in your market. Rank laptops by Smart score to see which one comes first new, or by Budget score at โฌ700 or less if you accept refurbished.
How much memory do you need?
On Picksly's scale, 8 GB is worth about 33 out of 100 and 16 GB is worth 100. For a laptop that has to last several years, 16 GB is our editorial recommendation. Check on the manufacturer's page whether the memory is soldered: if so, it can never be upgraded.
Do you need a dedicated graphics card?
Only for gaming, 3D or heavy editing. For everything else, integrated graphics are enough, even though Picksly's scale, calibrated on dedicated cards, gives them 0. That is why, for office work, it is better to compare the processor and memory scores than the overall score.
Is Picksly paid by merchants?
